International League Governors' Cup Championship |
 |
|
Frank "Shag" Shaughnessy, who served as International League President from 1936 until 1960, introduced his playoff system to the league in 1933 and the Governors' Cup was born.
Shaughnessy, enshrined in the International League's Hall of Fame when first formed in 1947, saw the need to maintain interest for more than one or two clubs to the conclusion of each season and his playoff format, which allowed the top four teams to advance, filled that bill. After viewing the success of this format in the International League, several other leagues (including the Pacific Coast League) were soon to follow.
A trophy to be awarded to the annual winner of the Shaughnessy playoff format was designed by then International League Supervisor of Umpires W.B. Carpenter, a silversmith. Named the Governors' Cup, the trophy was sponsored by the Governors' of New York, New Jersey, and Maryland, as well as the Lieutenant-Governors of the Canadian provinces of Quebec and Ontario (at the the time, all 8 IL clubs - Albany, Baltimore, Buffalo, Jersey City, Montreal, Newark, Rochester & Toronto - were located in one of those states or provinces).
After 55 years of service and many, many homes, the original Governors' Cup Trophy was given a permanent home in Cooperstown, NY at the Baseball Hall of Fame following the 1988 season. The original trophy, which was baseball's oldest rotating trophy at the time of its' retirement, consists primarily of solid silver and has been appraised at more than $3,000. A new trophy carrying the Governors' Cup name and tradition was created and continues to be passed on an annual basis to the winner of the League's Governors' Cup Playoff Series.
